Loft Insulation Grants

Loft insulation grants are available now from the Government for all home owners, occupiers and private tenants. The loft insulation grants are 100% FREE to anyone over 70 or receiving benefits. If neither of these apply to you, then don’t worry, anyone can receive loft insulation grants of up to and over 50%, regardless of income! You do not have to repay these grants in any way! Loft insulation grants apply to loft insulation that is supplied and installed by registered installers. Loft insulation grants cannot be applied for if you plan on installing the material yourself. See our Grant Assessment Calculator to find out exactly how much your cavity insulation grant can be.

How loft insulation works

Loft insulation is an important method of decreasing the amount of heat lost through your home’s roof. Up to 25% of all heat loss through the home is via the roof due to a lack of loft insulation. The latest Government guidelines recommend that loft insulation should now be at least 270mm thick, which means that many older homes which haven’t had their loft insulated recently won’t be at this level.

Topping up, or re-insulating your loft will bring added protection against heat loss. This is a very practical, and thanks to the loft insulation grants, a very cheap way of reducing heat loss. Insulating material works by stopping the movement of heated air through the material, meaning that little heat is lost. The insulation material we use is either glass or mineral fiber material and is laid between the loft joists, with additional layers cross-laid at right angles to ensure there are no gaps where heat can be lost.

Loft insulation is a difficult process that should be carried out by trained and experienced installers. An insufficient installation will result in less heat retained within the home and so the loft insulation won’t be as effective. Loft insulation grants are only available where loft insulation is installed by a registered installer, not if you plan on doing it yourself!

Whether it is either “topping up” your loft insulation or a complete new install, the energy savings made will be noticeable. Ultimately, loft insulation is an investment that will pay for itself through reduced energy bills. After cavity wall insulation, loft insulation is our next best energy saving tip for the home!
